Snippet from the book:

Tylve was going to Tiverius.

She and Yiran had left the City of Glass in the morning, when mist cloaked the streets grey with trampled snow, before the shops opened and when the rubbish collectors still roamed the streets. They travelled using the same mode of transport Tylve had used when she went to Tiverius to pick up the barygraph.

By train.

Except this time, everything was different.

Yiran was from a rich family, and he didn’t travel with the common people. He hired a private cabin. He was paying for all her expenses, and he was paying her a stipend, so did this mean she was now a spy in her own country, paid for by a foreign actor?

Not according to Yiran. They were both in service of humanity.

There was a time, Yiran said, that Chevakia and its stability had offered peace in the world, but that time had passed. The Chevakian doga was forever mired in scandal and infighting, and the responsibility for world stability had passed to Peria.

They were grand words and lofty concepts.

Tylve was uncomfortable talking about such big things. She avoided politics and preferred to be practical. She needed a job, and he paid her. That was all there was to it.

Except she knew it wasn’t.

Politics might be an uncomfortable subject, but if you always avoided it, other people made important decisions in your name without your involvement.

She had just expected saving humanity to be more… glamorous. Riding to a war on the back of a magnificent eagle, wearing a glorious uniform.

Not this sneaky, secretive sort of thing.
