Echidnas mug. Black inside.
What the heck is an echidna? It’s not a hedgehog or a porcupine, although it has spikes. It’s not a duck, although it has a beak and lays eggs. It’s a weird Australian animal that doesn’t even have nipples, but feeds its young from skin glands in the pouch area.
Echidnas are quite common in bushland, even in and around the major cities. You can see them rummaging around in the leaf litter during the day. When threatened, they dig into the leaf litter so that only the spikes stick out.
Echidnas live alone, but are not territorial. During the breading season, they form a “train”, led by the female and followed by up to ten males.
